And this is what I get for not being thrifty

View Comments

Setting aside the fact that I don't own a personal computer at home, or that I haven't eaten a proper lunch in two days, today has got to be the worst work day I've ever had so far as a 100% self-employed tech news/ celebrity gossip blogger. I might not go to church anymore, and I might not feed the cat at home regularly, but really, I don't think I deserve any of this.

Not having a PC forces me to work outside of home, of course, preferably in a nearby computer shop or Internet cafe. The problem comes when there are too many kids staying inside the damn places, leaving me no choice but to search for more right across the street, or worse, in places that require a single jeepney ride, like Recto, Quiapo, or somewhere in Quezon City.

I'll make it no secret, I don't like this lifestyle a bit. And my editors are all oblivious of the fact that I write all of my articles outside of my own home, even though my profession states bluntly that I am a work-from-home freelance writer. Damn.

I haven't bought a PC yet, after nearly two months of being self-employed like this, because I prioritize other things first, like say my new iPod Touch. I thought that when I bought the damn thing, I'd be able to post directly to my blog via email. Oh, but I was wrong. Well, there really is an option to post directly to my blog through email, because the Notes application on my iPod Touch can be integrated with the Mail application, and I can send notes to any working email address as long as there is an available WiFi connection. But the problem is, either the Mail or the Notes application keeps adding formatting to my text, making the final article look like crap on my blog as it's published.

Yahoo! Mail adds an unprofessional advert signature if I send my articles through that, while Gmail still adds those nasty HTML formatting codes. Gmail desktop offers an option to send plain text email, which is what I really need, but unfortunately it doesn't support Safari. And iPhones and iPod Touch's have Safari built in! It's practically useless at this point.

I hate it; I have a useless iPod Touch, and now I'm sitting here at an Internet cafe in Isetann Recto, where my computer has a USB port, but I forgot my iPod USB cable at home! So I can't load any songs or videos on my iPod Touch right now, even though it badly needs refilling (Last night iTunes crashed while I was using it in a different computer shop, and after I managed to re-open it I was surprised to see that all songs and videos from my iPod had been erased. Over 6GB of multimedia data.).

I'm in such a bad mood that I can't even begin to write; not even the smallest stories. And I'm feeling the impact of Microsoft's decision to withdraw from buying Yahoo!. Thank goodness the deal never came through. My computer problems are bad as it is.

I'll still try to write at least one story for each of my gadget sites today, though. If there's one thing that I don't like wasting, you see, it's time. So I better sign-out of Blogger and sign-in to my other blogs now, lest I be attracted to play Counter-Strike with these other guys in the cafe.
