WordPress + AI: Building a website just got easier. Again.

WordPress has powered a huge share of the web for years. W3Techs puts it at roughly four in 10 websites (W3Techs). What’s new is who, or what, can do the work on those sites.

Until recently, building or changing a WordPress site meant learning the tools yourself, hiring a developer or copying and pasting between an AI chat and your dashboard. Now an AI assistant can work on the site directly.

What changed, in plain English

Think of your website as an office with a front desk.

In late 2025, WordPress gave sites that front desk: a standard list of the things a site can do, like create a page, edit a post or change a setting. Then came the connector, an official plugin that lets AI assistants read that list and act on it (WordPress MCP Adapter). Page builders such as Bricks now plug their own tools into the same desk.

Put together, you can connect an assistant like Claude to your site, give it a login with only the permissions you choose and simply ask:

  • “Add a services section to the homepage.”
  • “Fix the spacing on mobile.”
  • “Draft three blog posts and save them for my review.”

The assistant does the clicking, then reports back. You don’t need to know the technical names to benefit. You just need to know it’s possible.

What it means for you

  • Faster builds. You describe the change, the AI makes it, you review it.
  • Cheaper small changes. Edits stop waiting in someone’s queue.
  • You stay in control. You decide what gets built and what ships.
  • It’s still your site. Your hosting, your content, your WordPress. Nothing is locked inside an AI platform.

What to watch out for

  • It works on your live site. Back up before big changes, and build behind a maintenance page when you can.
  • Give it only the access it needs. A dedicated login beats handing over your main admin account.
  • Review everything. AI is fast, not perfect. You’re still the editor.
  • Parts of it are still new. Bricks, for example, labels its AI abilities experimental (Bricks Academy). Test on a staging copy when it matters.

My take

There has never been a better time to build with WordPress. It was already the most flexible way to own your corner of the web. AI just removed most of the friction.

Web design, web development, content: in the right hands, AI tools let one person conduct the whole symphony. The skill that matters now isn’t code. It’s knowing what good looks like and saying clearly what you want.

So if you’ve been putting off the website, the redesign or the side project: it’s time to build.
